Poetry Out Loud

stARTSomething will host the 2019-20 regional finals for Poetry Out Loud on Thursday, February 6th, 2020 at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg (snow date Sat. 02/08/20 at 10 am). All high school students in Adams, Franklin, Fulton and York counties are eligible to participate in this national recitation contest. Each participating school will send their winner to our regional contest. Our regional winner will join 14 other regional winners at the state finals in Harrisburg on March 8th & 9th; the national finals in Washington D.C. will be held April 27th-29th, 2020.

Poetry Out Loud is a partnership between the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts (PCA), and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Poetry Out Loud is free and provides standards-based curriculum materials to schools, teachers, and students. You may view the teachers' guide on-line at www.poetryoutloud.org or request a hard copy.
Poetry is enjoying a popular resurgence as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of rap music. Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater in the English class. Students can master public speaking, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage as they participate in the local Poetry Out Loud contest.
